How to Share Access & Order Tests for Someone Else

Written by Jeff Kaminsky
Updated over 3 weeks ago

Goodlabs lets you share your health data and order labs on behalf of people you trust — or accept the same from a provider, caregiver, or family member. This article walks through the full flow.

Overview

The Sharing feature lets you:

  • Give someone access to view your health profile or order tests for you

  • Request access to view someone else's health data or order tests on their behalf

  • Do both — mutually share health access with a connection

Connections can be family members, friends, physicians, caregivers, or patients.

Step 1: Go to Your People

Navigate to Sharing in the sidebar.

This page shows:

  • Pending requests — invitations waiting for approval

  • Existing connections — people already linked to your account, with their permission badges (e.g., Can view health, Can order tests, Mutual)

You can click any existing connection to review or edit their access details.

Step 2: Add a New Connection

Click Add new connection. You'll be asked: What kind of connection is this?

Option

What it means

Request access

Order tests for someone else, or view the health data they share with you

Give access

Let someone else order your labs or view your health data

Both

Request and share health data with each other

Select the option that fits your relationship.

Step 3: Fill Out the Connection Form

You'll land on the Add your connection form. Fill in:

  • Relationship — e.g., Patient, Friend, Family Member

  • Your role (optional) — e.g., Physician, Caregiver

  • Email address — the person's Goodlabs-registered email

  • Nickname (optional)

Then select what you're requesting:

  • View Health Profile — access to lab reports, biomarkers, action plans, and saved files

  • Order tests on their behalf — book appointments and manage lab orders for that person

Click Send Request when ready.

Step 4: Manage the Pending Request

After sending, the connection appears in Your Patients (for provider relationships) or Your People under Pending requests.

From the pending request row you can:

  • Cancel request

  • Add prepaid test — attach a test to the invitation

  • Edit share details — modify permissions before they accept

The request stays pending until the other person approves it in their own account.

Step 5: Order Tests on Someone's Behalf

Once access is approved, you can place orders for that person.

  1. Navigate to Shop Tests

  2. A banner at the top will show: Currently shopping on behalf of [Name]

  3. Select a test, then choose a location by zip code

  4. Proceed through checkout — payment is charged to your account

  5. The order is confirmed and appears in Visits & Orders → Orders for Other People

Privacy note: Lab results are delivered directly to the person the test was ordered for. Viewing their results requires explicit View Health Profile permission.

Checking Order History

Go to Visits & Orders and look under Orders for Other People. Each row shows:

  • Test name and type

  • Order status (e.g., Order Received)

  • Who the order was placed for

  • A Receipt link
